Ready For Love?
When I was single, friends loved to give me various dating
advice: don’t go to the single bars, don’t hit the Internet, don’t have sex too
soon, don’t call the day after, and on and on…It was exhausting. I got to the point where I preferred staying in
with a good book and a glass of wine. Ironically, the moment I decided that I
no longer needed this love stuff, I met my husband.
The dating world can be crazy. Marriage can be even more
insane. I remember my cousin dated her husband
for nearly 8 years until she finally gave him an ultimatum: a ring or a
breakup. He gave in and they had a very sensible wedding and are still married
today, yet whenever I see him at family functions, I sense zero affection between
them. On the other side of the spectrum, a friend of mine rushed into living
with somebody after only four months. They seemed wild about each other. She
found out the hard way, though, that he had a substance abuse problem and a
crazy ex-girlfriend.
In my stories, my characters are hardly ready for love. They
fumble and resist. They don’t always trust each other. They misunderstand each
other. Yes, they’re a mess, but that is where the satisfaction comes into it
too. A good story makes me root for the characters to persevere. After the
entire struggle to accept love, it makes me happy to see them finally triumph.
I want them to have a HEA, and if
that makes me a sap, so be it.
Besides, are any of us really ready for love? And how do we
even know? Despite all that dating
advice from friends, I wasn’t. Were you? What’s the best (or worst) dating
advice that you ever received?
